i've had issues (long post)

first, sorry i havent been around, but i have had some mojor problems

i recently got a rose BTA, which i thought was a good thing , but, the LFS guy took longer then he should have getting it off the rock, (where the problem started)
i got it and a new acro (wife let me go to the LFS by my self) in the tank, all seemed ok
i was working a lot of overtime so i wasnt paying as much attention to the tank as i usually do and the wife told me that the rose wasnt looking very good, so i looked at it and come to find out it was/had split, which i thought was cool, not, yes it did split, but, it split the dead area off, so the dead area was still in the tank and i didnt know it
i started looking around at the other stuff and noticed the acros were dead, and the fish were not acting right, i did a few w/c and things seemed to be doing better, but that wasnt the case, after looking closer and reading some threads, come to find out the DSB was crashing
i had a 100g rubbermaid stocktank (for the sump) so i filled it up with about 25g or so of fresh salt water then started draining the tank, took about 5hrs to get all the rock and animals out of the tank, then i started taking the 300+lbs of sand out (thats a lot of sand)
this actually took a few days to do and the tank and what is left is doing better

i lost all but 2 of the acro's and the carpenter wrasse and the naso tang, which is sad, the naso was around 5 years old

again, sorry, for my not being around, but, as you can see i have been busy, i have missed talking to you guys

right now im talking the wife into some new lighting for the new start, i hope to have them soom
3 400w MH and 4 160w VHO's

Craig, i took the wife shopping and out to dinner, the flowers are next, lol

so what you are saying is that the DSB failed ?
If so why everyone in here is recomending it?
WHats the reason to have nitrate free tank for five years and than BOOM ?

I feel sorry for you.I dont have DSB and I was thinking of adding more sand. Now I dont know anymore

yes the DSB failed , the anemone just jump started it, i think

basically, the DSB works fine for a while then fails, like you said, the reason is basically not taking proper care of it, it isnt something to add and then forget about, you have to take care of it like anything else in the tank

im not trying to discourage any one who has a DSB or anyone who is adding one, when it is taken care of properly it will last and be a benefit the tank

You sure this was the DSB?
Sounds like you had a hunk of dead anemone in the tank until you looked at it. I know first hand what a mess that can be and it can definitely cause a crash!

well, Matt, yes and no, lol
part of the anemone did screw up the tank, but i got it out and did a few w/c and all seemed to be ok, params were coming down, then they went back up, i tested at the surface and the test showed a bit high, then i tested at the sand bed and the test was very high and after reading alot of post regarding this, i found that the DSB was failing, i didnt want it to completly crash (it was almost their) so i took the measures before this happened

this was indeed my fault, IMO, i dont think i took proper care of the DSB, that was a big learning curve (i dont beleive in mistakes)

im going to get my new acro today and my anthias, they have been at the LFS for about 2-3 weeks so i could get the tank back in order

the tank is looking really well, the 2 acros that are left are doing great, polyps are out, i will post a pic in a minute
