This is the Margarita snail tank at one of my LFS. Sorry the pic is blurry but it was taken with my phone.

Only 2 of the snails in this tank were still alive and you can see the bottom littered with empty shells. I didn't get to talk to the employees there since my 3yr old decided to throw a little fit because he wanted to swim in one of the tanks. lol

My bet is that they have the temp set too high. I've heard they need a lower temp somewhere in the lower 70's or they don't live too long.

This type of oversight shouldn't happen at a pet store. Makes you wonder just how bad some of these places can actually be.

You are right margarita snails are from temperate waters and need a lower temperature to survive long term. There may be other issues in the tank also.

Our local petland lets thier shells accumulate as well. Going by a couple of thier tanks you would think snail shells is a form of substrate.

    I know right? LOL

Think I should shoot off an email? I doubt it would do anything but Jacks is a chain store. Maybe the employees just don't know about it. I wish I had been able to talk to them. I will for sure on my next visit.

Just the shells themselves doesnt really hurt anything. If they had like dead livestock jsut floating anf rotting then maybe it would be a concern I would address with someone, but I would do it locally first before going the chain route.
