Ummmm, with all due respect, i think this thread is about his new tank.............not his old one. Personally, I think we should leave his old tank out of it and let him continue on as he chooses.

I agree, you guys are being a buzz kill. I think that he just wants to clean the slate and start fresh with all the knowledge and lessons learned. I would love to see the progress. besides he asked for "constructive Criticism" not Monday quarterback sindrome....

i second that. i am in the process of wanting to build a 300 or 400 gal 9foot long tank but i dont know where to start. i just dont want to spend thousands of dollars for a tank when i can build it cheaper.

Jasonanatal's 120 gallon "Custom Built by Myself" Reef Aquarium Update.

Hypothetical Schematics and Reasoning Behind the Design

I have included some schematics containing the basic design of the new 120 gallon Reef Aquarium. Please remember that majority of equipment will be manufactured by myself so it will definitely take me longer than normal to bring this project to completion. I'm still on the fence about wether the actual aquarium will be constructed out of 3/4 inch Acrylic with "Euro Style Bracing" or 3/4 Starphire Glass. The aquarium itself is being placed in my office/bedroom so I can enjoy the beautiful reef during the day while working as well as enjoy the shimmering moonlight at night. I will hopefully start construction on the stand this weekend but it is my 2 year anniversary this saturday so I will be spending the majority of the time with my wife.

Pretty drawings! Is it possible to add dimensions and equipment labels to your renderings?

Goodwin9, thank you. The dimensions and labeling shouldn't take too long to complete. But the dimensions of the aquarium are 30 inches in height x 30 inches in length x 30 inches in depth. The aquarium stand dimension are 40 inches in height x 30 inches in length x 30 inches in depth.

    Ah, Google Sketchup. Good stuff.

I'll be watching too. Better luck this time around, Jason. I see you're in the Bronx. I was born in the Bronx. :)

If I could give an opinion, use glass. Acrylic scratches too easily, and you'll have the devil of a time getting coralline off it without marring.

ReefSparky, thank you. Google Sketchup is an awesome application. I think I'm going to go with Starphire Glass for the aquarium. But I'm trying to confirm some information from the glass company. They told me that there is a special type of silicone used for bonded Starphire glass and it's more expensive. However, I'm not sure that I can confirm the validity of that yet.

So are you saying that the cost of the silicone will determine whether you go with starfire or acrylic?
