I love jawfish & I have an open top tank, most say that = possible wasted $ but I just wanted to take a poll of past, current jawfish owners with open/partially open tops to see how probable it would be.

Of course I meant "did your Jawfish jump" in my poll, can't seem to edit that.

Also if you vote, can you please post how long you have/had your jawfish.

    Thanks!

I have had a few throughout the years with an open top tank. Yes i have have had a jumper in the past but from my experience they only seem to want to jump when they are first introduced and once established in a burrow, they do much better and never stray too far from their home.

The best way to prevent the dreaded jump is to introduce them before adding any other fish to the tank. Because they are intimidated and bullied easily, they may take a while to settle and thats usually when they jump.

I do still think its a risk but I have been lucky with the same one for over two years now.

Thanks much for the detailed info, I have also heard the same on jumping being less likely once they're settled. I just know I am going to be getting one, my LFS got a pair of Yellowhead's in and I may just have to put one on hold. I do have a good # of fish so we'll see what happens.

    Great to hear opinions/exp/advice though!

I had two blue spots jump. One first jumped into the overflow then, after we got it out of there, jumped out of the tank altogether. Expensive mistakes.

That's a bummer, BSJ are beautiful fish, how long until it jumped? I will most likely not chance that investment, the yellowheaded is under $35 at the LFS so if anything I will go that route. Thanks for the input though!

I figure they had both been in the tank for about 2-3 weeks before taking "the plunge".

I agree I wouldn't have thought they would be natural jumpers as they like the burrow and be in the sand so much. I guess their skiddish/shy tempermant is to blame.
