    Sometimes, I hate options! Hahhaha

Thanks for your opinion. I really need to sit these 2 beside each other and pick. How much can you open the top with the Eshopps?

I haven't done anything but leak-test my tank so far, so I haven't even unboxed the skimmer. The guy who had one said that ther is no problem opening the lid all the way, but the screw holding the skimmer on the back interferes with removing the media basket. The solution is a very slight mod to the tab on the media basket.

I know what you mean about options. I'm now rethinking my decision and wondering if I should have gone for an HOB refugium instead of opting for a skimmer.
    Hmmmmm.... decisions, decisions.

Maybe get a HOB refugium and then hang the skimmer on the back of that

I'm kidding....but it might be plausible?

You know... I actually thought about that. What I'm going to do is get an inTank media basket to replace the stock basket.

    Nano Cube 28 Media Basket

I'll use the center chamber for macro and add the jbj Nano-Glo for light.

I have one of those. I really like it. I did have to tweak it a bit to keep up the flow, though. I sort of wish I had gone with the smaller bag of Chemipure Elite so I could run a bit more filter floss on the top chamber. The large bag fits snuggly in the bottom chamber but it really slows the flow so you have to open it up at the top.

I bought an acrylic sheet yesterday for 2 reasons. To make a cat-proof lid for my girlfriend's 5gal. betta "Chi" tank (made by Fluval, I think?) AND to make a cover for the rear chambers. I'll be sure to post pictures and, if it works as well as it does in my head, I'll give everyone specs to make their own. It may have to have holes drilled it to allow for some gas exchange but it won't be airtight so not much. My ultimate goal is less evaporation which means less severe salinity swings. For those that might have to leave your tank for more than a day, you know what I'm talking about.

I also have another idea....this has to do with the crappy sponge that is supposed to "hold itself" in between the walls on the return chambers. I can't for the life of me, get a sponge to STAY there. It always ends up slipping down. This MIGHT be attributed to the fact that my tank wasnt perfectly level which means one side got more flow than the other. Now that my tank is no longer on carpet, I'll be able to test my theory. If this still happens, here is my idea.

Buy 2 of "feeding rings".(the ones that hold floating food in a 2" circle so the food doesn't float all over the tank).

Take the styrfoam out and throw the rest away.

Cut the sponge to form a square that will lay over the entire return chamber horizontally. Cutting a 1/2" hole in the middle will allow the return line to run up the middle.

Glue the styrfoam on the bottom and install. This will allow the sponge to float and change with the water level but still slow the water as it falls into the chamber. I think making 2 or 3 layers of sponge would stop bubbles as well.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
I would wait until the cycle is complete but no real harm done if you do.
