All in all this is not as hard as it would seem. Just go slow and follow the direction exactly. It took me about 10 minutes to drill the first hole. I was looking at the progress too much. The second hole took about 5 minutes. It is noisy with lots of scraping and screeching but it's manageable.

Nice job with drilling the holes - keep the photos coming. This is going to be a great project.

btw - what type/brand of overflow is that?

I got it from the TX Holey Rocks guy. It was $30 plus $15 shipping. Came with 1 3/4" hole saw, 2 1" bulkheads with 1" tees glued to the bulkheads and 2 4" lengths of 1" PVC.

Thanks, it was easier than I thought, still nerve racking tho. I just tried to put as little pressure on the bit as possible.

Aquarium Safe? I would think most silicone is inert once cured, most being the operative word. What would you recommend?

Use GE silicone I. GE silicone II is anti-bacterial and will kill your tank. You can use any that is aquarium safe.

    Aquarium Stand

I built this stand out of 23/32" sanded plywood. The trim is 3/4" MDF. The center support is designed to be removable so the sump can be taken out.

I completed the stand last Monday and water tested the tank and sump all week.

I just started painting the back of the tank black and have one more coat to go. I put wood putty in the holes in the plywood and anywhere there was a space. I will let that dry and start painting the inside of the stand tomorrow. The inside of the stand will be painted white.
