I dont have jumping fish yet but hear about the gobies being avid jumpers so I thought like everyone else cover the top with glass or plexiglass but then there is the heat factor to deal with so I am working on a thin plexiglass top and have so far cut out the area's for my wires and my protien skimmer and filtration system and drilled hundreds of tiny holes for air and am starting to make walls around the edge of the lid about the heighth of my lighting system and am going to add fans from some old computers I have stashed in the basement wired to an old motherboard with a 250 power supply to solve the heat problem which may in turn keep things cool enough and I might not have as much evaporation and less water added making a more stable environment overall. The motherboard was easily mounted in the cabinet at the end of the stand so its out of the way. Whatcha think? Good idea or am I just staying up to late at night? Wanna get cool about go ahead and add blue lights around the top for th moonlight's unless there a part of your lighting system already. I would post a pic but I am much to cheap to buy a camera.

I wouldn't put any sort of plexiglass top on your tank. It will mess with gas exchange. CO2 and O2 are exchanged in your skimmer and at the water surface. A covering like that impedes this process. A build up of CO2 can develop which can lead to the formation of carbonic acid and drop your pH. So I would leave it open. Now, lots of people keep fans going across their lighting and water surface to help with heat problems. That is something worth experimenting with!!!!

Instead of covering the tank, make a wall 8-10"s that goes around your tank. So you still get the benefits of a open top with the added security. If the fish can jump higher then the wall, then they really wanted to go carpet surfing.

I have plenty of cherry and maple I have just been dodging putting a top together. The stand turned out pretty nice so I might do a lid for it this week.....
