Sorry if this is a really lame question, but I am curious. I would like to have an open top tank, but I'm worried about fish jumping out. Are tangs, angels, anthias and dottybacks known to be jumpers?

    Thank you!

Dottybacks, maybe. Tangs, angels, anthias, no.

    Hey Kc,

(told you we have similar taste!)

here is something you might find helpful - along with anyone else here who wants a simple light-friendly solution for their "open tank". Like you, i worried a lot because I have both a Flame Hawk and Dottyback and I was told that they jumped.

I bought a bunch of clear 1/4" polypropylene mesh from the guy who has this eBay listing below. His user name is Discusdave out of Atlanta GA i believe. He had searched all over for clear poly mesh (impossible to get in small quantities) and had to buy it in some huge bulk amount which he now sells on eBay at a very fair price.

Awesome person and into reefs as well. He will send you simple instructions on how to use this stuff with some screen frame and spline that you can get VERY affordably at Home Depot. The wonderful thing about this mesh is that you cannot see it if you look up at the surface of your tank. It literally becomes invisible. It does not affect your lighting either! I bought enough for a future large tank so id be sure to have it on hand. It doesnt spook my fish either nor does it seem to collect much salt creep. I like the 1/4" mesh size as well.

I would HIGHLY recommend this stuff to anyone who needs a cost effective solution to keep "jumpers" in while maintaining more of an open tank style. Dark mesh is easier to find but I wanted the clear stuff.

The guy is great to deal with as well. His own tanks are gorgeous (he had pics of them posted as examples of how nice and clean this clear poly mesh is).

I had NO problems making a simple screen top for my tank and i absolutely love it. If i borked this link and it doesnt work - look up discusdave on eBay or message me and I can give you the info.

    good luck :)

Okay, thanks. I might reconsider the dottyback then....I just really like the orchid dottyback.

That looks good. I will put it on my Ebay watch list.

I am pretty sure he has it for a Buy it Now sale option. I think i may have emailed him or done something like that. I just happened to snag the first auction link i saw so it might not be the first one coming up - that would save you from having to watch / wait if you didnt want to.

    orchid dottybacks are gorgeous. :)

Psuedochromis are jumpers. kinda dottyback like. My purple jumped 3 or 4 times. Very annoying.

My athnias jumped one. Just when extremely scared.

Thanks. I have a pseudo in my 37 and I can definitely see that they would be jumpers. He is very active and agile. Ugh, that's one of my worst fears - finding a fish on the floor!
