Well, that was exciting! Thankfully I was on the sofa right next to the tank when my flame wrasse decided to leap from the tank. My fish splash a lot - so luckily I was facing the tank and saw him, otherwise I may have thought they were just splashing.

I have a mesh lid that sits in the top rim of the tank. It's served well for over a year - but I guess my fish have gotten too big and powerful for it. My flame wrasse jumped, lifted the lid, and went sailing to the floor.

My question is for people that have mesh lids on their tanks - how do you weigh the lid down so the fish cannot lift it up?

    Thanks!!

Congrats on being in the right place at the right time.

I would think getting some aluminum bar and attaching it to the screen frame would work. You should be able to find the bar at a home improvement store.

+1 on congrats on being present and thus able to save the fish

anything relatively heavy and reef safe would be good
some quarter of bathroom tiles - ceramic and used as frag plugs so therefore should be safe and they are thin so wont stick up above tank frame

Thanks guys - those are both good ideas. I'll run to home depot tomorrow and pick up something. Tonight the lid is being duct taped down. lol

I've really got to get my evil fish out that makes everyone jump. But that's another thread for another day lol

Glad to hear you got the fish quickly! I use the aluminum frames sold at lowes. I just cut it to the correct dimensions, so that it fits perfectly inside the rim of my tank. It actually fits a bit snug, so sometimes it's tricky for me to move it, never mind a fish.

Yeah, that's exactly what I have right now lol. I have to pull up hard on the lid to lift it - yet this fish just busted right through it. lol

So I need to weigh it down even more!

I know! I was like Whaaa! As he went sailing to the floor. I was amazed. He reminds me of the Hulk - He turned male a few months ago, and with that change just got huge and angry LOL.

very fortunate that you were there when he jumped! Dont want to loose any fish but esp dont want to loose a fish like a flame wrasse!
