My friend and I moved a 92 corner to his house for his son. He was given it from a guy that comes into his store that just gave up on his tank. It took us all day when it normally takes us 3-4 hours to tear down and reassemble a tank.
He has his own piano and 5x2.5x2.5 reefs... (both with chillers mind you).
So I go out of my way to help him move his new tank and borrowed a truck, paid tolls and gas... let alone my labor and time. We get there and the tank is LOADED to the gills with softies. This guy had his tank for 15 years and never touched a thing. Who ever set it up did it in the "plenum era" and he didn't want to use it (understandably).
Well, after we stored everything in coolers and broke it all down, we came back to his house to set it up. We washed everything off and him and I got into an arguement about washing the sand. I told him about the bio load and stirring the tank up. He wanted to do it his way. Everything he wanted to do was more work. We got it all set back up, except the chiller because he ran it different and needed tubing.
Tonight I go over his house and the tank is 99 after hooking up the tubing for his chiller. The tank is SUPER cloudy and the 2 cleaner shimp wer cooked looking. Their shells peeled away from them like they were cooked and they were white. All the coral was closed and/ or limp looking and the only life I saw were two mated clowns.
My venting part was how he knows I needed a chiller and he already had 2 of them and I am still kinda like "uh" cuz I saw his new tank sitting at 99 w/o the chiller hooked up. But I still went out of my way and out of my pocket to help him and he couldn't be like "hey, here's gas money and tolls" or "Hey, I know you NEED a chiller and I have 2... thanks for helping me all day." I think I am more T'd he didn't offer anything.

The extra kicker is I was supposed to get a mini frige to try to circulate water through it to cool my tank and he wouldn't let me leave to grab it real quick cuz he kept guilt tripping me. Now the guy won't sell me the mini frige. It was less then a year old for $40, I have temp problems and I dont have any money to throw at a chiller to save my tank.

Has anyone had any luck with circulating water through a mini frige? I was just talking to my other friend and he said it totally doesn't work.

So, I was looking at it as he got the tank, A BUTT LOAD of extra stuff for free, with my labor for free and atleast he got that if all the stuff bombs. I'd be happy with just the free stuff. The chiller alone or the koralia power heads or any of it... he's mad. He was fighting with his wife when I left his house cuz he was so mad about it. Some people.

Doesn't sound at all like a friend to me, just a d-bag. I'd be epically pissed if I were in your shoes.

I've heard some good stories about using a fridge to chill as long as you take out the little partition that separates the freezer.

Oh, so I'd want to make it more of like a freezer? I was thinking of trying to design or use some kind of corrosion proof cooler (for transmissions or radiators if I can find one safe for the tank) and run water through it slow. That is a good idea to remove the seperater though. Thank you. I will def try that if I can find another deal on one unless someone who has tried it says they tried it and it didn't work.

I feel you on the friend thing. I was feeling "lube-less" when I got home and was thinking about it.

lol... I see that. You know I always help people and I will always say no when you try to give me money but I atleast want to be offered something to say no to. I help my other friend all the time and he always tries to hide money in my car. I wont take it or I'll put it back in his car. That is why I haven't bought anything fish wise (that isn't costly like a chiller) in a long time. I have an unlimited store credit with him and it's nice to see it's a give and take relationship.
This other guy though, yeah I think I realize where I stand with him and I don't see myself helping him anymore.

I've read this article on the minifridge turned into a cooler. I think it's a fair idea. Makes sense too about removing the partition for the freezer section when you read it.

I'd give myself a day to cool over about what happened. Maybe then if the guy calls you and asks for help or whatever you can tell him that the way he treated you was not cool. Some people are really just clueless of other people's time and emotions.

So in the link the guy states he's used it for a while and it worked with more coils for more of a "pull down" (like I've heard on here before). I just haven't heard anyone say they actually used this method and it worked. My friend had me second guessing the project saying it definitly don't work.
I'll run to Home Depot tomorrow and see what the 3/8" Opaque tubing looks like and what it costs in lengths and see the extent of this project.
    I appreciate the link. k+
