    after about an hour of putting the rocks in, the skimmer was pulling out some nasty gunk. i need to go to my LFS and buy some ammonia test kit then seed it with some of my live rock in my QT.

    could there be nitrates with ammonia ? or does it have to go through ammonia,nitrites, then nitrates. not that i have ammonia with nitrates just a general question

    I believe typically during a cycle Nitrates won't appear until ammonia is 0. Start testing daily for ammonia & nitrites. Once ammonia is 0, start testing for nitrates.
