So. I lucked out big time. For the better part of twenty years, I have worked retail pharmacy about half morning shifts and half evening shifts. Usually every other weekend as well. The pay is good, but the stress is outta sight. So an opening comes up at the Prison here in Shelton and I applied. State job. State benefits. State retirement. Here is the breakdown. I still cannot believe I scored this.

Pay: 18% pay cut. That is the only downside.
Vacation: I go from 20 days per year to 12. But in ten years I will be back to where I was. That is OK too.
Health care: Far, far superior coverage. My health is not the greatest. I will save at least $3000 per year in co-insurance payments. Maybe up to $5000.
Retirement: Makes it possible for me to retire at 65 without issue
Hours: 5:30AM to 2PM Monday through Friday. No weekends. No holidays. One personal holiday per year. I even get holidays like Martin Luther King day off.
Misc: I don't have to deal with people. No more rude, demanding, self absorbed individuals screaming about their prescription not being done. I will miss the cool cats out there though. And they far outnumber the bad.....but let me tell ya, some of these customers are just flat out nasty, and it only takes one to screw up an entire day.

No more third-party billing. That is gone. The prison has a formulary. That is it. No more compounding (making prescriptions from scratch). It is pure production. We serve several of the surrounding jails as well.

I can grow a beard. I can go to work in jeans. I just cannot wear certain colors, as I might get mistaken for an inmate. NO MORE TIES!!!!! They are actually not allowed. Inmates can grab hold of them and choke you out easier.

I tell ya, I am psyched. Thank the Lord I do not have to buy anything else for my tank, as I am losing my hobby fund for awhile. But that is OK too.

The best part of the whole thing is that I will be home everyday when my kids get home from school. I will have every weekend off with them. In my profession, this is such a rarity, that until now, even I was unaware of it's existence.

So......hurray for me!!!! Today is a good day. ;D;D;D;D;D;D;D

Glad you are happy but I can't help to think that the customers will be the worst in the world. the only thing they have going against them is a guard will come down on them with the smack down if they don't like the service. But at least you have that going for you too. here is southern il we have 7 prisons in our area so there are allot of guards that live around here I have talked to a few and they say it is not too bad but what job is perfect. good luck and don't get shanked.

Congrats man! Money isn't everything, being less stressed out and being able to be home more often counts for a lot.

    Congrats!

My girlfriend is doing the same thing you(previously) did with the pharmacy deal.

    I take it you're a pharmacist then?

Good luck with your new job, I really hope it lives up to your expectations.
