I usually mix my kalk and let it sit for a few hours or overnight. I have a current batch that I mixed on Thursday, is it ok to add or should I shake it again and let it sit for a couple hours before adding? It's in a covered milk jug

do you have a ph meter. if its not at least 11, then add a pinch more shake and let sit for hours, that is if your drip slow.

I don't know for sure, but,
When I drip my KALC in (Mrs Wards pickling lime), I put about 2 tsps in 3 qt jug of RO/DI water, shake it up real well (reminds me of a song, was that the Cars?), anyways, and start to drip it right away. It still leaves the sediment in the bottom.

I'd always read about leaving it hours or overnight, but I rarely do. Nothings died yet.
Params seem to be good for me, etc.

i meant "...let it sit for two hours" I had a 280gall rimless look over, it evaped about 4 gallons a day, I would slurry they hell out the kalk, get to a ph of 16 and dose full on from a Kent Marine IV doser and it would spike my tank to about 8.6 for maybe an hour then go back down to 8.1-8.2. I would not do that on a tank smaller than a 125 though. I love kalk, its way safer than two part, additives, which can easily mess up your ion exchange, I always found myself testing calcium like OCD crazy.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
IMO you really need to let it sit over night at least.

Coraiiline, if I wouldn't have shaken it up again, could I have just added it after it sat for 4 days?

I mix mine and usually add it after 24-48 hours. Kalk is made up of such fine particulates that it does take awhile to settle out.

I would make sure you know your Alk value and pH if that is all you have before adding it and retest a few hours after adding it.

Kalk is good stuff, but it's strong stuff.

I have been messing around with it for about 6 years and I am still wary.
