    Hey Fellow Aquarist,

I would like to get some opinions about the following:

I want to get a auto top off system to replace evaporated water from my SUMP. I get between 1/2 to 3/4 of a gallon of evaporation daily in my sump. I have a protein skimmer in my sump that works best when water levels in the sump stay consistant. Instead of using standard RO\DI water I want to use kalkwasser as the replacement water. I want to keep water levels consistant and my calcium at a steady level, I believe this might help on both ends. But seeing that I am a newbie, I would like the opinions of other more experience reefers out there, let me know what u think about what I am attempting to do, and it would help me achieve my goals stated above. Thanks reefers.

    Hey Guys,

Thanks for your thoughts, just so there is no confusion. I am not going to use a calcium reactor, just an auto top off system to replace evaporate water with kalkwasser, if I wasn't clear my apologise, you guys still think I am good with my setup? Thanks.

yep. just remember kalkwasser has quite a high PH so make sure it isnt going to be getting added at a fast rate.

As aquaboy staed Kalkwasser has a pH of around 12! So to ensure that you don't elevate your pH too high or to quickly, dose it slowly and dose it at night as their will be more carbon dioxide in your water since photosynthesis will have ceased and oxygen level will be lower. This will enable the high pH associated with Kalk to be lessened!
Other thought is to add vinegar(acetic acid) to your kalk mixture. This acid acts in a way as to reduce the pH of the kalk as well as deliver a higher level of calcium than by dosing it as solely kalk!!!

I drip my Kalkwasser mix replacement water that way and it has been working out great for me so far. I don't do it all the time maybe once a week or so.

a CaOH2 reactor is basically a weaker version of a Ca reactor. so depending upon your Ca and dKH needs i dont see a reason why not.
