To cycle the tank faster, when starting a new aquarium, you can add a small piece raw shrimp, let it decompose then it will add nitrites.

Always have way more room in your sump/fuge than you think will be necessary for a power outage. Without the return, your fuge/sump will recieve water from just about everywhere: overflow, pipes, pump etc... if it doesn't seem like you would have a problem, test it out to make sure ( have a bucket or garbage can near by). It is better to test than to lose gallons of water to your floor.

After cleaning your tank, always check the floor for fish that have jumped ship. I lost 2 long nose hawk fish this way!

When leaving for a vacation, make arrangements for a friend to feed your fish. Your fish will not survive your vacation regardless, but you'll feel better about it and you will have someone to blame.
