Ok fellow three reefers here is my question: what the hell does karma have to do with anything? we lost valued member of this community to karma? Hey Dave come back you can have all my Karma. I mean c'mon what does karma do for anyone except boost ego or make ya feel insulted? I look at the post or reply I don't care about stars or karma or the fancy name you get for the number of posts you have its all just fun stuff and really has no other value. Now Dave has left Matt has to be frustrated and we all lose. I propose that no one give me karma anymore and anyone who wants what i have I will find a way to get it to them. If Dave comes back lets all give him extra karma and I am gonna write him and tell him so. My ego is stroked by the success of my fellow reefers, wanna make me get a puffy chest and feel pride reply that the advice I gave you worked or at least put you in the direction you needed to be. I am beside myself over the fact that karma is that big of deal around here and if it is gonna be that way this board will slowly end up thinning out. My attraction to this board was low egos, helpfulness, politeness, no high school melodrama and finally Matt has done a great job of keeping the playing field level and 3 reef running on an even keel. I begged and pleaded and worked to be a moderator here and all my customers have this site given to them because I am proud of everyone here, lets not let ego or karma or BS ruin it now.
sorry its another tirade but come on is this really what everyone wants?

I'm with you on that Phil. I thought Dave was very knowledgeable and now he's gone all because of karma. Come back dave.

Well, I like the Karma and the cute names......I liked Nautilus, and I would like him back but do you really think he left over a dispute about Karma and only Karma? I would HOPE not....there must be more to it that we all know on this board. You are able to deactive Karma if you wish.....I like this site NOT ONLY because the info is Excellent (because it really is) but I, as a user , and probably because I am female , love the beautiful graphics, ease of use and of finding the infomation easily, AND because it is FUN! It gets a little boring just looking at an all text forum...it is nice to have some little pictures and twists in the whole thing. Participation in peripheral is voluntary. I don't NEED Karma, I just like it!! Matt has a passion for this hobby and it shows in this website. ;D

Let me rephrase my self. I meant that he's now gone and karma was part of his issue. Yes, Matt does a wonderful job with this site. I'm not taking sides with Matt or Dave. I just hate that this site lost Dave.

Phil, I also do not not like the thought of Dave leaving. & I certainly hope he will reconsider and return to us...

But not lets not blame the "karma" or any other particular design feature of this very well managed forum for his leaving.

Personality "clashes" will happen and get out of hand in this media format quickly. -- very simple to have something you write get misconstued or be implied completely differently then you meant to communicate. i.e. simple sarcasm, which you might have intended to be stated with "humor" unfortunatly may be taken as something far different than what you intend by another.

3Reef is a place with a friendly, happy, sharing atmosphere where mutual respect each other (both for knowledge and "lack" of it... :p)

I agree with Ms. Birdlady...Karma's are a "feel-good" feature which add positivily to this environment (while I might argue for the removal of the "negative" "-" "option")...

If one wants a sterile format with no feedback or somekind of "ranking" format showing degree & quality of participation and interaction with others...stick with reading books.

"Karmas" while not mean much to some...they obviously do to others...It really is the only way one has to show appreciation for quality and attention given by anothers post...

WE ALL LEARN FROM EACH OTHER HERE! - and those of us that frequent the site fairly often do so also because we enjoy the input and interaction of other posters on the subject of Reef Keeping...

I am certain that I have a great number of very firm beliefs and views that others (probably "most") here would find offensive or theatening or just plain "bizzare" - if I inadvently let a more obvious one slip thru, that another here takes exception to...please do not take it personally...and consider it not intended to be an attack on your core beliefs...

Dave (if you are still reading)...please come back...we need you here - your input is both highly regarded and invaluable to many here...(just look at all those "Karma's" you had! ;) ) - any "disagreement" you had with another forum member about any subject does not justify denying the rest of us with your informative, thoughtful and generally "enjoyable" posts...

Matt... you run a great site...and we all have great respect, admiration and regard for the efforts you have put into it...please however, keep in mind, some of us may need a little more time then others to adjust to major policy, forum "philosophy," or system changes...

    Highest Regards to all,

    "Omar"
(think I will switch to my "other" name to save confusion between different "Scotts")

You are so perceptive to realize that karma is not that big of a deal and certainly not the reason for Dave, aka Nautilus leaving. Continue to give karma for helpful information or to encourage people to post, or to make someone feel better... it's all good. Matt is not a karma Nazi and let's hope Dave returns, eh?

Just a quick note My post isnt a rallying cry for anything but more of a perspective piece, first Dave has his reasons for leaving and that is what they are his reasons. Second I dont want a sterile site I want the 3reef I joined a year ago the one that is reef directed if i want politics and such I can get that elsewhere I dont need it in one of my few retreats. Thirdly Karma and such is fun but not when its made not fun and thats what I meant dont take it seriously. Like I said if its is an issue please take mine. Lastly, while Matt runs the site we all have a responsibilty to police each other, just not in public forum, if there is an issue take to the person involved, Matt, a Mod, or another member dont blast infront of the whole site I believe that makes both parties look bad and can pretty much gaurntee that no one wins in that case. Any way lets lighten up and have fun and everyone stop taking yourselves so seriously.

Phil I agree with you 100% This is not the place to blast 1 person or the other or to take sides as this is seen by every one that visits this site ( New and Old ). That is why I asked Matt to delete the other thread on this subject as I felt that it reflected badly on the forum in general. Dave & Matt are grown men, there was an issue and this is what the outcome was, So let us all respect that decision and if Dave changes his mind he knows he is welcome here any time. But I do feel that discussing this matter in a public forum is just not the way to go!!! ( Email Dave or Matt or one another if you feel you want to talk about this )
I will end by saying I hope what I have said offends no one as it is just my opinion ( lets keep this fun) ;) ;D
