I always joke around how we midwesterners do not know how to handle winter storms....which we do not! :-[ We dont know how to drive in it, we dont have the correct power lines, and we all freak out at the first sight of snow.

However there is a major system moving into the area that could very possibly result in long term power outages.(most of our electrical lines are not underground) In St. Louis they are predicting about an inch of ice followed by between 6 to 14" of snow depending on how the current goes. They are warning that because of the ice then the winds power lines will break :-[ My first thought is of course the fish tanks. We do have battery powered pumps for the tanks and I am going to stop and pick up some heat packs after work if it hasnt started. My second thought (sadly) is us...being all electric with no fireplace.......brrrr!

There are a lot of other places that are going to get hammered a lot harder then we are, so just want to keep everyone in thoughts to be safe!

go get a generator and 3 gas cans. Us down in hurricane zone wouldn't know what to do without them. Trust me, if the power is out for 12 hours you will thank me for it.

I am going to stop at of all places Aldi's on my way home. They have a generator there for $150, one of my buddies has one that her has had for 2 years now. They use it all the time on work sites that have no power, it runs all of his saws, drills and what ever else he needs. He loves it so I figure it will be good enough for me.

You ought to see if one of the ones down by you have one schackmel, at least you could keep your tank running.

Great. More snow. I'm pretty damn sick of winter and we've run out of places to put the snow. Oh, and is anybody interested in purchasing my 1998 VW Beetle? It's there in the picture, right next to my SUV. ::)

I'm not so much concerned about losing power as I am about having the roof cave in under all that snow.

i thought about getting one yesterday, didnt think about going to aldis. I was at lowes for something and heard they are all out of generators already. That is exactly the size i need...cant do a whole house generator (cant afford it) but would be good to have something to plug the tank in (dont want to loose another tank) and maybe a light.

I havent seen the picture but Curt told me about it. I would be so majorly depressed if we had all that snow! When we had the blizzard in 1982 people had to get on their roofs to shovel them...hope you all dont have to!

It has started with the ice already and seems to be coming down at a good click. They said it was going to be lighter today and heavier tomorrow....so this is not a good sign

I honestly can't see how anybody could get on their roofs at this point without breaking their necks. Heck, there isn't even a dry spot to put the ladder down to get up there. I think I'm going to purchase a roof rake but knowing my luck, I'll spend the $50 for one and we won't have another winter like this for a decade.

i hope you get threw the storm without losing power

you could buy a long piece of PVC and add some pieces to the end of it to DIY a roof rake for less than $10. just a thought

Yeah, my husband is more than handy so he'll probably be making one soon. Sigh.
