I really like the look of the Kenya Trees and from what I understand they are one of the easier to care for corals. Those are ideal for me, since I don't have spectacular lighting, etc. I think I'd like to put one in my 12 gal nano.

Since I'm new to the whole reef thing, could someone tell me at what point I can put one in my tank? (after cycle, of course) and if it will be compatible with some clown fish? Aside from that, what else would I need to properly care for it so it will grow? I know you bring home a frag and that's about it.. don't even know how to get it to attach to rock! lol!

    Thanks guys, you're amazing!

Usually when you buy a frag or piece of it, it is already attached. There are ways of doing it, but it may just be easier to buy an attached piece. Second, it usually does well, but it can be tempermental too. I've heard of people having it for a while, then it just dies, usually to the relief of the person. It will most likely grow and take over your little tank, so just a warning.

All you really need for it is somewhat decent lighting, and stable water parameters. So once your tank settles down after the cycle you should be good to go.

I wouldn't put kenya tree in my nano tank that is for sure. Your happiness watching it grow will turn into regret when you can't get it out of your tank. It will be compatible with your clownfish and may even host...

I laugh when I see this because while its true it will grow and spread fast getting rid or its as simple as reaching in the tank grabbing it as close to the base as you can and slowley pulling it off of what ever its attached to. It spreads like Xenia does, fast, but compared to controlling Xenia, Kenya tree is a breeze.

I have a 56 column that is pretty much filled with it and once every couple of months I clean out about 2/3rd's of it and let it grow again. I have never had a problem growing it at all, it does well when nothing else does.

Where do you live at, because if your close enough to Chicago to drive here, I would be more than willing to give you all the Kenya tree you wanted for free!

Thank you for your responses. I have been looking at many corals and I just really, really love the way the trees look and flow. I'm not going to be upset if it grows too much. If it does, I'll just tackle that problem for now. Since I have nothing else in my tank, an abundance of something would be great! lol

I sure wish I lived close to Chicago. I just paid 25.00 for a quarter size kenya frag. =( I live in central arkansas.

I'm going off my experience with both and dis-agree. While it was tricky to tear the xenia at the base from the rock, it was almost a sure thing to get the entire base/piece. Kenya tree leaves behind a thin patch that quickly re-grows into, yes, another kenya tree. Kenya also drops branches when it gets stressed. Since, you brought it up, I would take xenia over kenya tree any day. Since neither will ever be in my tanks again, I don't have to worry about it.

Starfishies, you will likely regret putting either one of these in your tank IMHO. Something that pays off nicely is zoanthids.
