I think carbon is really important. If you use it in a reactor it helps water clarity a lot.

I know SeaChem Matrix has a really good reputation (really expensive though too...), but I found because of its small size it clogs up really easily. I've noticed my tank is clearer when I use Kent Marine carbon.

Yes, there is, but how often are you changing it? GAC is only good for about a week or so. You can extend it, maybe to a month, by rinsing it weekly and grinding it up a bit to expose new surface area.

That's a mesh sock, correct? How do you clean out a felt sock?

Turn it inside out, throw in the washing machine, add 1-2 tsp of bleach, wash, then rinse, rinse, and rinse

Theres a few things to do. Get rid of larger particulates by use of filter socks/pads and getting rid of finer particulates and impurities by use of carbon... change both out often.

Having trouble turning mine inside-out. It's a CPR Aquatics sock.

I normally rub mine in a bucket until they are white. It is hard for me to waste water on a small load of filter socks.
