I use the kiss theory keep it simple stupid. Don't over complicate it in your mind. It breaks down like this. The stuff that keeps tank going is in sand and on rocks if you mess with them to much it dies when it dies it kills stuff in tank . Mess with it a lot die fast mess with a little then little effect. When you do water changes or dose stuff in tank it keeps what's alive in sand and rock alive if you don't dose or water change eventually they starve and tank will decline . Because remember what's on sand and rock keep everything going and stable.

To many fish poop to much for certain size tanks that'd why you can only have so many per the size of your tank. Your tank can't get rid of all the waste so tank will decline. For example poop once a day in your toilet everything is fine. Blow it up all day every day that thing going to back up lol

Corals they need light most of all. I think go all out on lights from get go because eventually your going to want some off the good stuff.
Now lights are the most expensive piece of scam out there lol you don't have to get LEDs because everyone has them . You can get mh 20k that will give you a beautiful look. But pay the price on bill and have to change bulbs . You can also get T5 witch are long tube bulbs. These you can get some crazy color from and variety of bulb colors. LEDs are newest thing out that's generally in use. Its great looking on coral great on light bill . But unless you got atleast 500 to put into its super complicated and going to cost the same and more piece by piece just so you can make fake thunderstorms that scare your fish and sunrise sunset that only you in your house is going to get up to see lol
Some corals you have to feed. I have all sorts I don't feed anything to them and there all happy.

    General reef care 101
I have had my tank almost a year and two others before. Only tested my water once and I keep every type of coral with growth and colors. Fish don't die corals don't die. Don't have all the skimmers and lifters and other stuff I wish I could afford from marine depot. But my tank is stable and beautiful just saying don't get caught up in the hype just take your time. And realize this stuff is alive and I need to take care of it since I brought it home. All the scientific stuff let the scientist do.

That works out great until you have a clam/sps system. Then not so much.

+1, and more advanced fish. You would be surprised how easily some fish can die in a less than pristine system. For a softy tank, you are good to go.

    mmmmmm k...

I blow up my toilet everyday, more on Saturday's and Sunday's after a big breakfast and it works just fine... That being said, this must throw the whole KISS theory for reefkeeping down the drain.

I kind of agree with him.

That's why I have an SC150 protein skimmer ~ $100 shipped- works awesome

TaoTronics LEDS- ~$200 shipped- again, works awesome

NO DSB!! Only a shallow layer of CC. YES lots of live rock and Mega Chaeto in DIY sump., etc.

I rarely test either, I have sps, lps, and softies- all thriving- 25 different species total.

    Yeah I'm playing.

    Keep it consistent!
You can have a complex set up, but with consistent maintenance / upkeep, the work is simple.

As far as not testing, I wouldn't go that far...
You may not need to test for ammonia and nitrite but if you have a heavy fish system, Nitrate testing is a good idea.
Heavy SPS system? You should be testing the big 3...

Being successful thus far whilst being "lazy" isn't necessarily the correct path...

Not saying be lazy saying it can be easy with regular water changes and dosing. Nature will take care the rest .

Just know your limits and be responsible and it will work you don't need 1000 worth of equipment to keep a reef.
