so im setting up my fuge in a couple weeks and i am considering using 4 inches of kitty litter with 2 inches of sand on top of it.
ive searched this site and others and havent really got a reason to do it or not.

what are the plus's for using it?
what does it do more than a dsb?
any negatives about doin the refugium that way?

any info or links are appreciated

The benefit of using clay(kitty litter) is the tiny particle size that exponentially increases surface area for bacteria to live on compared to the same amount of aragonite sand. Which is also why you have be careful with it. You don't want it stirred up in the water column because it can negatively affect livestock. However, under a layer of sand in your fuge is where it belongs. Clays also leech elements into to water that livestock utilize.
