Basically i feel like my water isnt clear enough and i am having issues with GHA and others so i am going to put one of my old aqueon filters on the back with some filter floss and activated carbon. Currently i have nothing to hold the carbon tho. I found a old knee high stocking/legging (very thin mesh material) can run some water over it to make sure its clean then put the carbon in there?

Yes IME, you can use those to hold carbon

I use new, because I worry about traces of detergent, and other bacterial killing substances used in typical washing powders etc

yea thats what i was worried about too, but too a certain extent isnt it the same thing as people putting their filter socks (sump socks) in the washer and dryer?

It would be I suppose if they used detergents etc
but when I washed filter sock in washing machine, I did not use anything other than water, and the tumbling action of the machine, with the sock turned inside out to get it clean

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
I use them all the time, new ones of course. Cheap and easy, allows good flow.

If you rinse them as you would new carbon they should be fine, but if you are concerned any convent store like 7-11 has them.
