Are Purple Tangs, more specifically Purple Tangs from the Red Sea, know algae eaters. By algae I mean hair algae and so forth. I know they will eat Nori, but will they eat any of the algae that grows on the rocks and the glass of the tank?

If not what are some tangs that do eat such algae? I want to put it in my 120 G with my Blue Hippo, so keep that in mind when giving recommendations. Thanks

    Robert

I have a hippo tang and a purple tang and a sohal tang. I don't have hair algae in my display tank but the purple tang and sohal tang peck at the algae on the rocks. I had a kole tang that died but he seemed to eat more. Snails and hermit crabs eat algae on rocks and the sand. Hermits roam at night. I have a diamond goby and a sleeper goby and they eat algae in the sand but they might eat hair algae especially the sleeper because he goes all over the tank instead of roaming the bottom only.

Google will probably send you to threads and web pages that can help.:)

Look at the bristletooth tangs, in the Ctenochaetus genus, like the Kole tang, Tomini, Chevron etc. They are relatively pieceful and are designed to eat algae.

IMO the kole tang is the best. They're also very active, and have tons of personality.

I was thinking about adding a two spot bristle tooth. They are very attractive to me and seem to fit the bill for a final fish to add to my tank.

Thanks for everyones input...keep it coming though because I have yet to purchase a fish.

That would be another (long) discussion for another thread, or maybe forum all together. :)

+1 on that. Bristletooth tangs are algae eating machines.

Just avoid the striated B tooth as they are known to be nasty.
