with the crazy sale going on i am considering two k5 magnums used with a jbj wave timer. mount one on each side of the tank pointed toward the center of the front glass...

will 1650 GPH in one direction at a time in a 75gal be too much flow? i intend to go SPS/LPS in this tank so the LFS told me to go with K5's but i want to confirm I am not being upsold.

i was also told the magnums are ok with wave making devices because of the electric startup versus the K1-K4. i dont know if thats true or not. so if these wont work for wavemaking what else would be a good solution for the same cost of ~$300

    Have you looked at vortechs?

no, because the price seemed too high to even bother. $419 for one pump.... i dont know anything about this, so if you can explain why one pump for $419 would be better than two pumps for ~$150 (sale price) and a $50 device that switches AC back and fourth between the two pumps to generate flow id appreciate it. because that seems like a waste of money to me. but again im a noobcake with this stuff at the moment

well, so far i see the vortech comes with some sort of controller that has pre-programmed options for feeding, lagoon effect, short and long pulse, and some other options...

im comparing the Vortech MP40W right? not the MP20?

back to my original question though is 1650 GPH too much for current in a 48" long 75gal tank?

im reading elsewhere that 1 MP40W would be sufficient for creating a solid flow in the tank. so im guessing with that on one end of the tank and my k1's i have used for any potential dead zones around the overflow chamber? plus the return pumps rated for 900GPH (new pump i intend to get is 1200GPH)

so its about a hundred dollar difference then between two K5's and a controllable mp40 vortech. the vortech seems like it would be better for the simulation of real ocean current. the k5 will produce a solid ~1650 GPH output without any change or fluctuation.

thats so far all i can tell, and its very tempting to save that extra $ for it ;)

if your only going to have one k5 on at a time plus the 1200gph pump it will make 38X turnover in your tank... with both k5s on it will be 59X turnover

with one mp40 your flow is controllable anywhere from 22X to 56X

and how many times do you generally want the DT turned over?

The MP40 puts out 3000 gph. I bought mine used for $350. The controller will do more than the JBJ. I only have mine turned up about 60% on my 90g. The way you are going would be a wash and the Vortech is much better performance wise.

The real kicker would be getting a MP20. It can handle your tank at 2000 gph. Later you could add a second one and sync them up. you would have a much better set up than the 2 K5s. If you ever want to move to a bigger tank though, the 40 would probably be a better choice.
