two 550s on both sides of the tank. one 240 behind the rocks(in mid area not to close to the sand)
you could use 750s but I don't know that much about flow rates for medium-large reefs...

probably a pair of the 1400s maybe even more for sps. I have about 1600 gph of flow just in my 40 gallon

I use 2 1050s over the rocks, 2 750s on a wave maker in front of the rocks and 2 425s behind the rocks in my 75. My max flow rate is 78X the actual tank volume.

I would suggest using at least 4 to help eliminate dead spots. If you are going SPS I would suggest 4 750s as a minimum.

I would do no less than 4 750s in a 72g tank. That's not nearly as much flow as you think, as I have to K1s (400gph) in a 20g high with just Zoas and GSP and they love it. If I had any SPS, it would be barely enough flow (on the minimum end of flow for SPS) so I would have to get a 3rd K1 or replace the two K1s with larger versions. Once you start adding rocks the flow in the tank isn't nearly as turbulent, and you will wish you had at least 50x turnover so as to make up for the rocks negating some of the flow.

Better to go with 4 that are slightly too much (and end up using just 3), than to get 4 that are too little and have to use 6 (gets unsightly and costs more in the end).

    I have:
3x 750's - (1 on each side blowing toward the middle of the rocks and 1 in the center of the back glass blowing toward the front)
    2x 425's - (1 in each bottom rear corner)

As well as a MAG 9.5 return pump (950GPH) in my 58gallon mixed reef-softies, zoas, LPS & SPS.

My flow rate is about 53x actual tank volume (before the return pump-about 70x with the return pump) ... and I still have a couple of dead spots ....

Everything is thriving and the fish seem to like it, too.

im thinking of starting with 2X 750 for now, will that be to much flow for other corals other than SPS ? and ill get a 250 for the rear center.. i have a mag 9.5 return
