i just recently introduced a ton of snails (large and small) to my tank. i have a koralia 2 for flow and was thinking i should put the snail guard on the power head. this of course would keep snails from entering the mouth and getting pureed. Does this reduce flow though???

I wouldn't worry about the snails getting sucked into the powerhead. I've never had it happen to me. the snails might scoot around on the powerhead but they never chopped them selves up. The guard may reduce flow, I dont know what type of guard it is.

I have the guard on my Koralia 2 and I don't think it reduces flow. Try it both ways and see what you prefer.

Two K3s and about 30 snails here. I was worried about that at first but the snails just cruise right along in. No casualties yet. Just got my first coralline spots on them a few days ago actually.

I have 4 Koralias in my tank. 2 with and 2 without guards. Snails have never gone in... at least not in the past year...

the guards do impact flow - but not really a reduction.

With the guard on, the flow is slightly more pointed and slightly faster bc of this. With it off, the flow is spread out more and softer.

An easy way to really see the difference is to point one at the surface. Then look at it with and without the guard. You can really see the difference in the flow spread. Your hand can feel the difference in velocity.

So you can adjust your flow by wether or not you have the guards on. Getting flow right can be tricky and this is just one of the tools I use to get it to my liking.

I personally wouldn't worry about it. Even if a snail gets in there it's not the end of the world. I had a turbo snail walk into a K2, I just stopped the pump and made sure the prop wasn't jammed against the snail and the snail happily walked out none the worse for wear, I turned the K2 back on and all was fine. Of course it's probably not GOOD for the K2 to be in that state for too long but still I wouldn't worry about it.

I have 2 Korelia 2"s and 2 Koreila 4's and I've never had that kind of problem. Actually the guard is good at controling the flow against the width of the tank and will cut down on sand displacement.
