Picked up this guy for the tank.

Not really. The tang police would arrest me :) But this tang is beautiful. I snapped a picture of it while at the LFS yesterday. This fish makes me miss having my large tank, tangs are my favorite type of fish.

So not a real exciting trip to the LFS yesterday. All I picked up was a bottle of RedSea part B buffer and some frozen mysis shrimp. I saw a couple frags I wanted to get but decided to wait until I had my water chemistry down perfect. I'm a sucker for being impatient so I consider this a huge win in my book :)

The big three water params have not changed over the past week and a half so I assume the little frags in the tank are not absorbing much.

The results from last night's testing are as follows:

    Mg: 1200
    KH: 6.7
    Ca: 450

So it looks like Mg is a little low, KH is really low and Ca looks good. I added 1.4 DKH of RedSea buffer last night and will do the same each day until target KH level is met. This should speed up candy cane growth, right? Should I raise the Mg to 1350 before trying to get the KH to where it needs to be? I haven't purchased a Mg dosing bottle yet.

Was near the LFS yesterday and stopped in to browse. Of course I "had" to get something. So I studied all of the frags and picked out one I thought was doing a good job of healing, no signs of tissue loss, etc. Told the employee this is the one I want and what happens when he pulls the frag out of the water? He dropped it 6 feet to the floor  I just watched it bounce in horror. He climbs off the ladder, picks up the frag and puts the frag back in the tank. He starts to grab another frag of the same coral, pauses and then says, "I'll just give them both to you." So he gave me the basketball frag and another frag of the same coral for $20. If the basketball survives it will have been free. I can't complain about that ;D. I also spotted a single zoanthid in the sand and he said I could have that too. The zoanthid hasn't opened since I put him in the tank so we'll just have to wait and see about that.

Anyways what do you guys think about placement? One of them is in the middle and kind of shaded and the other is towards the perimeter in full sun, both near the bottom. I read chalices like to have low light and medium flow.

Also found these when I was moving rocks around (little, white, cylindrical). At first I thought they were tunicates but research says they are sponges.

Another current FTS. Lights were dimming so sorry for the dark picture.

nice a 2 point shot... You must have been horrified at first but score!!!

As far as the low KH and Mag I would do water change and check it. Then make your dosing decision

I picked up a little porcelain crab this weekend. He jumped off the net and swam straight to the mag cleaner. So looks like you guys will just get to see his backside :)

Also installed the new sicce voyage nano. It is a lot smaller than my previous koralia, moves more water and is more flexible. So far I am really happy with it. I may get another with a wave maker but then I could probably afford an mp10 for a little more.

Purple corailline algae is showing up in tiny spots all over the place so I moved the two purple rocks to the back of the tank (idea from mike) in the section right after the fuge. Hopefully this will give pods another place to reproduce.

    Current FTS.

I have been seeing where people are making light gaurds to cover the backs of these tanks. I personally thought it would be better to let the light into the back of the tank and let algae grow in the back as well. Would this not help to keep nitrate/phosphates down even more? Is there a problem with algae growing on the return pump or something? Is this more or less user preference to keep maintenence in the back section down?

Unless you have a separate refugium in a back chamber you need to light, I prefer to keep it blocked. Algae growth in the return area can build up, get in the impeller, and cause it to stop.
