    RO membranes love softened water, in fact the softener does much of the work for them. All major membrane manufacturers recommend softened water and most will not warranty a product if soft wate rwas not used.

    Do not add any additional filters to the RO/DI system unless you have specific problems such as high sediment loading and even then a single filter is recommended in the correct mircon range. Adding additional filters, no mattre if its a prefilter or carbon, add additional head loss decreasing the membrane performance and GPD output. In almost all cases a single prefilter and single carbon block are more than adequate before a membrane.
