I've had emerald crabs and put 4 in my present tank a few months ago and I've only seen one. I have heard on a forum thread that they rarely live a year so maybe he'll die of natural causes.

I had one emerald crab for a while do nothing but eat algae off the rocks from what I could tell. I added two more down the road that were slightly darker in color. I found the larger of the two new ones with it's claws locked on my OG emerald. I immediately took him out and banished him to the fuge. Two weeks later, I thought maybe he learned his lesson so I put him back in the DT. That very same night I saw him with his claws locked on the same OG crab again. This time he stays in the fuge for good.

I wonder if it's possible that there ard two slightly different species of emerald crabs, one darker and one lighter. They always seem to be obviously one or the other. Is it possible the darker ones are more aggressive?

probly theres a few different varities from different parts of the world. that family of crabs have alot of different species linked to them.. I just hhope my green slimer makes a full recovery soon.. I might want to cut off the tips that are damaged, but since its had alot of stress lately, im going to leave it alone.

yea Ive grown to believe if stocking a tank with any type of crabs, smaller is better.. less chance to do BIG damage.

I'm glad I read this!! I'm having issues with a new trach losing flesh and this morning my green star frag was decimated. I was debating on it being the emerald since my fiance said she saw him on top of my palm polyp frag. Guess he's getting banished to the fuge. LOL!! MU HU HA HA HAaaa

Ditto with what other posters have said - I've only one had emerald crab cause trouble, it and was a very large one. It was banished to the sump. When I buy emerald crabs, I always pick the smallest ones the LFS has!

My emerald is small, body about the size of a dime. He had made himself a home under a chunk of live rock but now that I've added a Zoa colony, he won't come out of it. Sits right in the middle of it and snips them off. Before the Zoas he would fight with my puffer over his mysis shrimp. He's cute and fun to watch but I don't know that having him destroy my Zoa buddies is a good alternative toward being aggressive to other tank inhabitants. :-/

We had a 3" emerald in the coral tank at work. It decided to start his own reef and would take frags and move them to an area we could not reach. It got to the point where he had a "Wanted Dead or Alive" poster. I tried taking him alive for about 2 months. When the owner went away for a week, I made it my personal mission to get it. By day 3 of being on my own, I stabbed it with a t-12 torx driver. These are flat tips. I felt bad, but he was destroying hundreds of dollars worth of corals.
