hey all, i am looking for a sponge for my fuge/sump set up im building, it is for a 40 breader tank and it has to be 18" long and it can be 3x4" square or close to that size. does anyone know where i can order such a animal? my lfs only has them 12" long. i could put 2 end to end but would rather not if possible. thanks all for your time...

you can also use chaeto in your fuge which is a macro algae that provides a place for copepods to lay eggs and it also takes nitrates out of the water which is harmful and can cause algae blooms in your tank. if you still just want a sponge what i use in my POD farm are shower poofs.

i see what you are saying but in my case the fuge is first then the water falls over a 12" high wall on to the sponge that sits between the wall and a smaller wall that is a inch off the flor of the sump acting as my 2nd bubble trap, if that makes any sense without a picture?

I would skip the sponge all together. Its just one more thing that will need maintenance and really isn't necessary if your sump is setup right.

Your fuge will/should have slow moving water, after all – you are looking to grow a swamp. I don’t think this is the type of environment that a sponge is going to thrive in to be honest.

Macro’s are the way to go set to a reverse photo period from your tank to help stabilize your PH.

lol, I either need more coffee or have not had quite enough! I see now. Depending on the sponge you buy you can cut them – just make sure the placement is post fuge and not pre. I like the selection at Dr. Fosters & Smith – Contact Tangster on this forum and see what he offers in his shop, that’s probably the best avenue of approach.
