can you go with a filter pad?

    PURA Filtration Pad

This one is 15x30 and you can cut it to your specifications.

I know a lot of people that run no kind of mechanical filtration what so ever. All they (and myself) use are lots of live rock and an oversized skimmer. I use a filter sock mainly to eliminate micro bubbles, and in my next setup I will eliminate the socks all together to lessen the maintenance load. I thought the same exact way you do in the beginning, but this is not freshwater where filter pads and canister filters are ideal.

+1 illwill. mechanical filtration is not needed. you rely on your rocks, sand, and macroalgae to filter the water, not filter pads. Not many use filter pads in a reef setup. It can be done, if you keep them clean, but they clog fast.

ok i will try not to use a sponge. my last wall of the fuge pours over a 12" wall that is my sump, how can i break the fall so it does not create bubbles in the sump area before my return sucks them up?

If thats the case, raise the water level. If thats not possible, then a sponge may be the only thing to prevent the splashing and microbubbles. If you post a pic, maybe we can come up with a better solution.

the water will be flowing down the glass and i dont think it will waterfall off the glass and now that you said that it may not make any bubbles at all?
