I am hoping for some help here. I met a guy at the pet store (kid really) and he has a 80 gallon tank. We talked for a while and he was interesting in dosing the heck out of his tank with "stress coat". I advised against this and instead recommeded a feeding regime including garlic and some other ways to reduce stress. He has a tang with what he identifies as lateral line erosion. He has been playing around with some forums and feels confident this is the case. The symptoms he told me are "rotting" fins and general health decay. I am kind of mentoring this guy with his tank even though I am only a year into the hobby myself. Can you guys give me some tips to share with him on how to help his fish? Thanks in advance guys

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
LLD is usually a nutritional deficit, so you are on the right track there. Marine algae suited for tangs and supplements such as selcon or HUFA should probably be added.

Stress probably has a component as well so making sure that no stray voltage is present is always a consideration, although not common it was also consider a contributor to LLD.

There is some thought that there is a biological component whether viral or bacterial no one has figured out yet.

Karma for helping out another reefer. :)

Thanks Corailline, he reminds me of when I just got started! I gave him my e-mail address and he e-mailed me that night with questions! I told him about this site but I haven;t seen him on here yet.

I hope Alex doesn't give him a roundhouse kick to the head!

LOL!!!!! I met my quota today after a 16 year old girl paid me back. Tell him to buy some selcon from HPC They have 2 bottles left and im buying one of them. Soak all the food in a half pipette of selcon with some tankwater.

This cured my Lavender tang in about two weeks. I had 3 spots of rot on one side that decayed all the scale off now you would never tell.

I brought my tang home with the start of LLD. I read good water quality and good nutrition are the most important things to help stop and reverse this disease. Definitely soak food and nori in Selcon - and feed lots of healthy foods!

Thanks for trying to help out a fellow fishman!

you might also find out if he uses carbon. there have been studies that showed low quality carbon as a possible cause.
