    For all those using Kalkwasser, I read that it leaves lead behind. I'm using Poly-Filter to help with problem I had this morning and found this;
    Description

    • With Poly-Filters, all water impurities like phosphates, nitrates, copper, silicates, and even ammonia are absorbed,
    • Pads can be regenerated by rinsing in saltwater (saltwater use can be regenerated by the reverse, rinsing in freshwater).
    • Cut 'em, slice them or roll 'em up in a canister filter.
    • Large square pads for enhanced chemical scavenging and can be placed under the drip lid of most wet/dry trickle filters.
Guide Review - Poly-Filter Pad Material

A very technical and thorough product! What's in it for us hobbyists? Plenty! Poly-Filter Pad material, when used accordingly, remove ALL traces of copper treatment. Continued use of kalkwassers leave lead behind. Poly-Filter Pad material get-the-lead-out! Phosphates? Not a problem. The use of Poly-Filter Pad material in high-flow areas work like carbon, only better. All heavy metals are attracted to the woven matrix of polymer threads and are held there... no leaching back into the solution!

Yes, sometimes we think things are safe and kind of take them for granted. I guess more thorough research must be given to everything we planning on trying.

I used polyfilters a few times when I was back in the UK- always had them on hand in case of emergencies

if they are the same thing your describing - they changed colour indicating what they had absorbed - so they went blue if you removed copper, they went red if you removed Iron and went black if they where mainly taking out normal biological wastes

a great product IME and one I would have on standby if they where available here

Think about the lead comment for a moment. Kalk, pickling lime, is used for food products. Do you really think they'd let us eat lead here in the states? ;) If that is you only source (marketing claim) I'd be a little more cautious about saying it :D Now if you had a peer reviewed paper or a few scientists saying it, I might listen. I'll email Craig and Randy, they booth use Kalk and both are scientists that do peer reviewed work as a profession and for this hobby.

You likely still have lead pipes in some of your residential areas for water supply. I'm sure a little lead in the food is no big deal :)

It is to developing minds (kids) which is why the amount is highly regulated.

Water from copper pipes that used lead solder is one thing, a product on the open market is another.

There are slight amounts of lead in Kalkwasser.. One of RHF's reports shows it.. Probably not enough to cause harm. But who knows if there is a long term effect?? That's nice to see you found that product. I tried a Polyfilter once, and came to the conclusion it is a very expensive filter pad. Hard to say I noticed a difference, but it might be worth trying again or at least every once in a while, to get rid of those types of impurities..

    Thanks Jed!!!

Ah, I see the old noodle is working! Do I think "they" would allow lead in something we eat? Absolutely! Millions are putting Aluminum in their arm pits (causing breast cancer), we are all trying to get Nitrite, Nitrate and Phosphates out of our tanks and "they" (FDA) allow it in our food. I have been into nutrition for 35 years and have learned through research all the poisons allowed in food that are purported to be in "safe" amounts. Cumulatively though is where the danger lies. You are ingesting some here, some there and they accumulate in your body.
I made no such statement about lead residue from Kalkwasser, I simply found information and posted it for the forum members perusal.

Yes, same thing. I had forgotten about Poly-Filter. It cleared the tank and got rid of the fishy smell in about 2 hours. A slight inconvenience is, for some reason, it makes my skimmer over produce for about a 24 hour period so I can't run it.
