But by posting you read it and gave no supporting info besides their marketing shpeal, you basically did say it by defacto ;) Now had you said you question it, or the likes, it wouldn't have been giving it credence :)

Heavy metals are far different then nitrate, nitrite and phosphates. In fact with out phosphate at some level, we couldn't survive IIRC ;) Not that I support it's uses in animal feeds and human foods.

Edit: I do see you used a question mark in the title though :)

The Randy I spoke of is RHM... and the Craig is Craig Bingman :) The article is a bit dated thus me emailing both to see if they have any updates. I know for a fact Randy uses Kalk in his tank so obviously he feels the amount is so minor it's not really worth noting ;)

Not saying it is in kalkwasser, but it is in food, so yes, pickling lime may have it as well. The FDA allows a .5ppm concentration of lead in most food except candy targeted at small children, which is regulated to .1ppm

FWIW if you read on you'll come to this paragraph about how it is in the solids and gets precipitated out ;)

Randy's article had much higher ppm listed as for what could be contained. that is one reason why I sent he and Craig an email about it as I suspect standards have changed since then (due to the Chinese lead scare).

I can guarantee you that Kalkwasser has lead in it. All sorts of other heavy metals as well. Luckily, if you're using it correctly, the majority of them precipitate out and never enter your tank. Almost all of it comes from the Mississippi Lime Company located in the mining area of Missouri. It is right next to the Doe Run smelter which is constantly buying out land that is too contaminated for people to remain living there. It is surrounded by Ironton, Irondale, Leadington, Leadwood, Iron Mountain, and numerous other cities with names of metals. All of the Cambrian carbonate that the Mississippi Lime Company (and Doe Run) mine there is high in galena(lead), sphalerite(zinc), and chalcopyrite(copper).

Anthony Calfo writes about using a "slurry method" Vs. a drip method. I've met Anthony and talked with him many times and I have a degree of respect for him. I have lived near these mines, visited these towns, read about all the lawsuits in the paper (high cancer rates, lead poisoning of kids, etc) for years and years. With all due respect to Anthony, I wouldn't use the slurry method in a million years.

Here's a recent article but there are literally thousands of them. Suburban Journals | News | EPA: properties near Doe Run smelter recontaminated

    Good info everyone!!

So you guys think most of the lead gets precipitated?? Is there anything from RHF testing the clear solution? I think the artical I have only shows figures before it's mixed with liquid..

Well, all I can say is that I've got a lot of tanks and I've used calcium hydroxide in them for sixteen years. (originally LFS bought and then Drug store purchased and then.......I've been using technical grade that I buy at a farm co op now for probably around 14 of those years.
I see no problems different than any other hobbyists, and far less than many.
