My big leather coral isn't looking so hot. In the pic, you cant really see it well. There is part of the skin that is missing. I know they shed and not to get too worried, but it lookslike pieces of the skin is missing and you can see inside it. Like if it was a human arm, small pieces of skin would be missing and you would see muscle. Is this normal for leathers?

I'm not too sure what could have caused this. The night before it started looking like this I moved some torch coral and a big mushroom around. But the leather was all closed up and there is no way it could have touched it on top. The leather is in contact with our frogspawn and they do fine together. No problems for the past 4 months.

    Any thoughts?

one of the strongest corals you can have - that said....many things could be happening. Detritus build up can actually burn an area, someone could have nibbled or it could be a natrual split.

I have one that started to split and I thought someone was munching him at night - he actually tore himself about 7 inches and then healed over and now has a new appearance. I never found a predetor so it was kind of cool to watch.

Have you inspected your tank at night? if something is happening its more than likely occuring at night.

detritus might be it! I remember the night before this all happened, there was a lot of detritus buildup on a rock and I swooshed it around with my hand. There was parts of the leather coral that had some of the detritus on it. This would make the most sense because there was some buildup on it that night.

This leather will heal right? Its not going to just start falling apart and die?

It shouldnt die. I have a large one the had a giant hole made in the middle during a move and it is slowly healing up.
