Yesterday I noticed that my leather coral has gone from vibrantly awesome looking to looking like death. I did some research and found that leathers ofter 'slough' which is some sort of growth process similar to molting. I read that they can look completely deflated and closed up. The problem is that mine looks REALLY deflated and sickly.

I can test my params and everything, but I think they're fine since all my other corals are doing fine. The only change i have made is that I moved him somewhere else in the tank the day before it happened. (he looked fine in the place I moved him for about 24 hrs before this happened). IF you need any more info let me know, otherwise PLEASE HELP :-[!!11

I dont think those polyps are bothering it because they are attached to the same rock that i bought the leather coral with.

Calcium is a little too low (380ppm) I am going to add some purple up since that;s my only calcium supplement i have on hand. I tested for phosphates nitrates, nitrites, pH and ALK. All are normal ranges. Is there anything else I could test for?

Those are in the center of the tank. I had to move the leather because he was too close to the glass and was getting irritated when I was cleaning.

Would anyone recommend an iodine dip? I've heard that they're great for bacteria problems, but i dont think that's it... How would I know?

Hi Eli - are those Zoanthids able to touch it? Zoanthids can sting neighbours to prevent them encroaching on them

I dont want to build your hopes up, but IME that coral does not look to bad
it is closed and I reckon it will shed - is there a reasonable/ not to heavy flow ?
the close down and shedding period will last longer if the flow is not adequate enough to flush away the old skin layers

I have kep a variety of leathers/ toadstools/ softie fingers etc - and recall many that have closed down like yours - or in a couple of cases worse looking than yours, only to come back better than before once that skin layer has peeled

but check the Zoanthids - as if its being stung it will stay closed

Yes, it is fine, just closing down to shed/grow. I have an all leather/soft coral tank and there is a lot of chemical war fare with them. Use some Chemi-pure elite to try and help with toxins.
