I got a couple of 10W led chips I was going to use over a small frag tank. The led's in the chip are recessed in the chip and there is a semi soft gel like substance that fills the cavity. At first I thought it was a protective coating for shipping but it looks like it was meant to be there. I am afraid of turning it on and having this gel melt. Can anyone tell me if the gel is supposed to stay in the chip?

    Thanks

    Paul

it sounds like that's the thermal grease they use to place the diode on the chip. it's not supposed to dry every completely. so you'll be fine IMO
