Few months ago, I did research on Reef Tank lighting, and most light color would be white (MH), and blue Actinic. Now, with LED, they come with White, Blue, Green, Red, etc. You name it all colors ;D.

Do any of those colors (except white and blue) actually help the growth of coral? or is it just for "looks" purposes?

I haven't owned LED's yet, but I would imagine that the fuller spectrum would help Corals grow :)

only blue and white, to certain point violet helps on the growth of the coral, everything else is just make the tank/coral look more natural.

I never knew that. So the other colors are just for looks?

    yup.;D

Edit: Correct myself a bit, coral can take red as well, but most red spectrum will be gone before reach deeper water and could promote algae growth

"More Natural"? There aren't many other colors, other than blue in the ocean; most other colors get filtered out quickly...

In hobby speak "more natural" means: "looks better to me, therefore it must be correct" ;D

But seriously, reefs often are pretty monotone, shades of blue....

I agree, but when I say more natural, is to our eyes, never said it is to the coral or fish. lol People love to see the bright color that will bring out by the so call "true sun light" which in deep sea, you won't be able to see that.

Cyan, reds, blues, TV are some big PAR/PUR contributers.

Not really, they are much less powerful than royal blues. In high enough numbers, the will grow corals (the red/violets and blues), but I prefer to use them for color enhancement. I am also experimenting with warm whites, and 595nm yellows, which so far ar doing okay.
