I have been looking for someone that has an LED setup as their main DT lights, to ask them how deep can the LEDs penetrate? I have a 31" deep setup I am in the process of building up, and wanted to go with LEDs, but not if it won't penetrate effectively that deep. Anyone have any input?

I have MH's at the moment but gonna use LEDs for my actinics. I will have an answer for you in a few weeks if not sooner.

With optics, you'll be able to penetrate much deeper than current lighting schemes that just use reflectors. I've seen setups on RC where the fixture is literally mounted to the ceiling feet above the tank and with the LED's close enough, and tight enough optics, they were reporting pretty good results. With 40 or 60 degree optics, I don't think you'll have problem at all punching through 30".

There was a DIY triple pendant that was mounted on the Ceiling b/c his numbers were to high. I think at 4' hestill getting par numbers around 300 @ the bottom of his 24" tank.
