Hi guys. I'm pretty new to reefing, and I got this light when I bought the tank I'm using. It's an 18 inch marineland LED light I'm pretty certain. I realize they aren't the best lights for any type of corals, but would I be able to get away with it for the time being? If so, what types of corals would be preferable with it? I will be upgrading in the near future.

This is what it looks like:

Also, I'm using a 29 gallon acrylic tank, but I'd estimate only about 20 gallons is usable space as there is a built in wet/dry system that I'm essentially using as a sump tank.

Here is a pic of the tank for reference:

Lower light corals should be ok. Examples would be Kenya Tree or Xenia. Just know they can take over the tank if not kept in check.

Thanks for the response. How exactly do you keep them in check? Or do you have a solid resource where I can do some more reading?

Well they can overrun a tank overtime. Nothing that happens overnight, but at the same time can be almost impossible to eradicate if you ever want them gone. Just something to think about if you want to get into higher end corals.

I just mean what would you do to keep them in check? Placement?

Several mushroom species prefer lower light. A few leathers would be fine higher on the rockwork closer to the fixture, as well.

Keeping the xenia and kenya tree "in check" requires a lot of pruning as they tend to grow and spread rather rapidly.

Would polyps do okay if placed mid/high points on the live rock? Also, I just checked out lavender mushrooms, they're beautiful looking.
