I'm not sure about obsolete. LEDs are yet to hit their market potential b/c of price considerations. Plasma lighting will not become a general use item until it is priced to where it's not prohibitive to use.

The numbers speak for themselves, with the plasma lighting being twice as efficient, but as far as obsolete. . . I'm don't think quite yet. LEDs haven't come into their own yet, and plasma is far off on the horizon.

The plasma in the bulb is... "the same temperature as the surface of the sun." !?!?!?!?
    WOW!
Wonder if there might be any cooling issues.

You guys haven't seen or heard of those before? To bad they cost about $15k, but they do last about 5 years I think.

Ah, as soon as I saw the thread title I knew what it was referring to. I've seen these on RC before. A guy over there built a complete Plasma fixture mounted inside a MH reflector using LED supplements. From the tiny bit of research I did, the plasma option was super efficient but it only produced a very warm yellow color spectrum, something like 6000K and definitely needed some kind of supp help. However it did kick out some pretty amazing par numbers for such a tiny bulb.

I don't think LEDs are obsolete by a long shot. I think you'll be seeing newer and cheaper fixtures coming to market for a long time..

    Here's the RC Thread

Oh yeah, these have been out for a while, but the price is crazy at the moment. The high output LED's are nearly economical right now.
