Right now I'm running a generic 175 Watt MH fixture of my 100 gallon reef(48" x 20" x 24") and I'm not too crazy about it. I figured now was as good a time as ever to jump on the LED band wagon. I'm looking at a semi-DIY build from this site: Reef Led Lights. Right now I'm looking at two potential set-ups-
    1. 3 Evil Par 38s (20 K) + 36 Cree XP-G R5 LEDs w/80 degree optics (36 cool white) on a 48" heatsink
    2. 72 Cree XP-RE Q5 LED's w/80 degree optics (36 cool white and 36 royal blue on a 48" heatsink

I'm also wondering if driver boxes are necessary or just optional?

    Thanks alot in advance.

It looks to me like it is just a nice looking hideaway for the drivers. I don't think it is necessary.

Very nice looking DIY. I ordered 4 Royal blue LEDs from a competitor of theirs, and was interested to read that ReefLEDLights.com do not warranty any less than 6 in a string. When I received my 4, wired them and fired them, only 1 lit...I guess they have had similar problems with less than six. The 1 LED that did light for me was BRIGHT! Lit up a nice sized spot in my 76 Gal (25" deep). LEDs are the way to go if you have the $$$ and are a little handy.

I've been toying with the idea of led lights for a little while now. There is a great diy thread on another site that offers amazing detail and great advice. I don't remember what site it is but do a google search for " soundwave led light " you should be able to find it. Check it out
