LED lighting

So I've heard alot about these LED Aquarium lights in my reading but I wanted to get some opinions!!

Im in the market for some new lights and untill now thinkin that MH were the way to go
It sounds great BUT IT IS Expensive!!! I figure that between not having to do annual bulb changes and the 40% less energy.. Not to mention how cool it is!!

So being a newbie Im a little confused with the lighting formula ?what is it again? And would this model even be enough light for a 90 gallon?? ( I am interested in having clams and other creatures needing alot of light down the road)
Im a little concerned with the fact that its new technologies,,,,, anyways thought I'd Throw it out there...

from what i understand, if you are going to be having clams and such in your tank MH lights are the only way to go. I could be wrong as i am a newbie as well but that is what i have heard.

 

The Solaris lighting system is suppose to be the best thing out there, plus they are controllable. Not to mention you can switch from 20,000K to 10,000K anything you want and anything inbetween. PFO was at our frag swap back in Jan. That light is amazing. I would hold of a few years before buying one and wait till the prices go waaaaaaaayyy down before buying one.

 

and you can keep clams under them

 

LED's are more intense then MH's, well I should say the 1w LEDs are. Especially when grouped together like they are in the Solaris system.

 

MH's until the LED thing get a little cheaper. As long as you put some fans blowing across the top of the tank bringing in cool outside air you should be fine with the heat they generate. Just don't put them in a enclosed top with no ventilation.

 

Setting up a tank today for that lighting system. We have had Xzinia
s growing under 24 LED's since sept 06 snd they are doing great . I'll have more to say about the Solairs after its been up for a few months.

 

ok so is the only reason your hesitating to vote on the LEDS is because of the initial cost???

another thing for the anti LED people.... Think of how moonlights work. That one little LED light penetrates all the way to the bottom. Now imagine having hundreds of them spread out over the top of your tank... Then you will understand the intensity of them.
