Well, I am taking the plunge into the great unknown (at least for me) and going with the Nanotuners LED 5.6 set. Please let me know your thoughts:

I went with the following setup:

    1 x Nanocustoms 5.6 LED Retro Kit
    Cooling Fans SilenX 16db Fans
    Fan Power Standard 12v/500mA
LED STRIP 1 6 x Edison Cool White LEDs
LED STRIP 2 6 x Edison Royal Blue LEDs
    LED STRIP 3 3 x Edison Cool White / 3 x Royal Blue LEDs
LED STRIP 4 6 x Edison Royal Blue LEDs
LED STRIP 5 6 x Edison Cool White LEDs

Hopefully, I should have in 3 weeks! The tech at Nanotuners recommended using door screen to soften the impact of the brighter lights on my corals for a week or two, anyone else used this technique?

    Thanks!

nice setup, and yea ive seen people use screen to dampen lighting. once i even saw someone try it with MH's which melted the mesh and made a mess.

Definately, I am really hoping to be able to grow at least the majority of corals / clams, reduce heat, save energy and go 6+ years without replacing my lights :)

I will take plenty of before and after shots.

May make some changes (feed back requested) :)

Nanotuners now has a 4.6 Cree LED kit, what would you all think of this layout:

Looks like this would give you good overall coverage. What's the distance between the led's? Also - I may have missed it, but are going to use optics?

Not sure on the color temp - looks pretty well balanced between blue and white...

I ended up going back to their stock layout which is basically strips that pushes the balance of light into the center of the tank. I will have to check if optics are part of their system (it does not say anything about it on their website).

Edit: I spoke to Nick at Nanotuners and he said use of optics was dependant upon application. In this case they are not required as the LED's are only 1.5 inches from the water and did not require optics (Basically the LED's have no where to go but down). He did mention that use of optics in this solution could potentially triple PAR numbers which might be too much for corals to handle.
