oh yea, the par38 bulbs are bad when it comes to the spotlight effect. if you dont have them over a tiny tank they look stupid because there is an obvious circle of light underneath it. but they do grow corals fantastic!

Haha, thanks for all the imput. I'm going to get some violets then, do you think four in the middle of my heatsink that has 24 LEDs in it will be enough for heavy SPS? My tank is about 16 gallons(bow front)

Is it true that anything under 400 nm is bad for sps and lps?

I wish I had money because I'd love to do an experiment that compares growth and health.

Please tell me if this has been done already.

Setup 3 tanks all connected to the same sump. In each tank have the same type\sized frags from the same mother colonies. But over each tank have one with LEDs, one with T5's and one with Halides. Same light cycle, food, etc.

Something like this would end the debate over the best lighting for growth.

I too am skeptical that LEDs are as good or better than let's say a MH fixture. I wish they are, but I haven't seen much proof yet.

Sorry those links are a lil confusing. This is a color of light, so there are different colors, looking for ones like true violet and violet and ultraviolet are all relatively the same. but looking at the nm range, they can vary from 390nm to 420nm. I use 420nm ones from ledgroupbuy. They look identical to the ones rapidled is offering so im guessing they are the same. There has been debate on using aquastyle or rapid but majority choose rapid so i wouldnt probably use their 395nm chip.

I read this article a while back on coral bleaching and in it, this talks about hramful rays being produced by light 395nm and lower.

I picked up the Ecoxotic 5g pico reef setup that has LEDs. All of my coral looks great under them, great growth too!!
