Thanks so far for all the reply's, my frequency and type of questions whatever they may be i feel are relevant for my lack of understanding, i know its a free forum, i have been a member for years, but if people answered questions with direct answers to questions i would be more clued up, but i'm getting there,
thanks to this forum and the good people on it, i could browse google and the internet or lfs for my answers, but i want to hear it from people who love the hobby and understand from people that have hands on experience,

The tank is 6 months old now, i had a cyano outbreak so i added a phosphate reactor with rowaphos, plus other methods, 2+months in it has now gone,
it houses 4 fishes and a multitude of softie and lps corals, it might still be early days but i feel i am doing very well, and partly because of this forum, leds are new to me and for stated obvious reasons in my interest.

Anyway sorry for the assay, i appreciate all responses even the constructive critism ;D

I have yet to see anyone compare the newest LEDs with halides. I don't see how it could not stack up. People try to argue sps but look at tanks like shins
.... With uv etc there just isn't a difference big enough to make up for the electricity, ease of use and replacement differences

Couldn't agree more. He runs sps very successfully with Leds. I would never want the heat, power consumption, and bulb replacement of halides

However, someone did borrow a PAR meter from their local reef club and posted a very detailed graphic of the results from their tank with LEDs just a few weeks ago. Quite frankly, even I was impressed (and as you know Tom, that's no easy task when it comes to new technology. lol).

My vote goes to LEDs. And if you're wanting to switch, now's the time.

    I voted LED's,
and personally grow lots of SPS, under 2 cheaper than those lights, non dimmable, blue and white only Chinese LED's!

My 180 I'm finishing in the next few months will have 3 of those fixtures on it!

My LFS swears by halides and he's been growing SPS for 13 years. He says color and growth is unmatched. HOWEVER, his energy costs forced him to go to LEDs and to be honest, he said he sees very little difference. They still grow and are colorful (maybe not quite as much). He doesn't buy coral, he frags off of his own colonies and his colonies grow under LEDs.

I voted halide, but both seem to work.

I vote leds. I love my radion pro. The light is so strong i cant run it at full power. Being able to control the spectrum of light is interesting. Also as others have said the lower power cost and heat transfer is a great benefit. I also like that the unit its self is compact and doesn't look bulky hanging over my tank.
