I have a 5 gallon jug of already mixed saltwater left over from my most recent water change (about a week). I was wondering the 'shelf life' of that saltwater, is there a time at which i should not put into my tank, or is it safe for me to add a little to top off my water level?

if its salt water Lrgtime - you dont want to add it for top offs, unless you want to raise your SG - only fresh water needs to be added for top offs (NB ok some may add Kalk)

but in a bucket with a lid, and a power head for circulation , I often have 5 gallons mixed up a week in advance of when its needed anyway Im sure it would be fine for even longer
but a good cover is essential IMO as you dont want air borne nasties settling in there

+1...agreed w/ steve....a lid is important to keep the airborne particles out as well to keep evaporation happening
