Well I want to know whether, lets say a 55 gallon tank with a greater width then length was better then a 55 gallon with a greater length then width. What exactly are the pros and cons of each? I wanna know just in case i buy a new tank to replace my leaking POS XD

I'm not sure what you're getting at here, but look for either a 40 breeder for a 3' tank, or a 75 for a 4' tank. 55's are not the best shape for a reef tank, too narrow front to back making it more difficult to aquascape. Petco is having the $1 per gallon sale and they have 40 breeders.

it depends one what you want to use it for and how you look at things. I don't believe it's better for a fish to swim in a straight line than in multiple directions, but some people believe you can keep a bigger active fish in a narrower longer tank of the same volume as a wider shorter tank. I personaly like wider, but I'm not big of a fan of a bigger cube (cube over 50). My tanks are 36x18x18 and 36x17x15 and I like the room I can get in front of my rock but they are still have some length to them
I think the 40g "breeder tank" is a very nice tank.

Ok I want you to imagine a 55 gallon imagine it front ways then imagine it side ways what do you like better.

The best tanks are usually have width equaling length to width being half the length.

Also I wouldn't over look the height aspect, I personally think A 55 is way to high for its width.

a 40 or 50 gallon breeder are nice tanks for reefs.

Keep in mind if a tank is to narrow(front to back) it becomes a huge pain to do a rock scape.

I think a 40b would be a nice tank for you, although I not sure you could afford to light it.

here is a pic of my friends 40g breeder. The pic of the rics is from behind the main rock structure, so you can see how much more 3D you can get with one, but I would want mine to be viewable from 3 sides like this one is if I had one

55 and 29 look good as a wall style reef. The 40 breeder and other similar shaped tanks are better for different types of aquascaping. The taller tanks get less light at the bottom compared to a shorter tank. You don't have to reach in as far with shorter tanks.

What kind of aquascaping did you have in mind?
