Bought a 125 gal tank / full system off CL and it has 100 lbs LR....The rock has green hair algae and some bubble algae and who knows what else. I decided that i want to kill it all off so i don't have issues later down the line. The person basically let the system go down hill after months of fighting it I think...also came with LOTS of tests kits and it appears he was trying to play catch up with an inadaquate filtration program.

I have searched and found this example to Nuke the rocks

"Soak the rock in a 50/50 bleach and water solution for about 2 days. Drain the soaking container then soak the rock in clean fresh water for 2 days. Drain the container again, rinse the rock in fresh water and soak again it in fresh water again for another 2 days. Then add a 2lb box of baking soda per 15 gallons of water and soak the rock again for 3-4 days. Drain the container then soak again in fresh water for a day then remove the rock and let it sit and dry for 3-4 days (The baking soda soak is to neturalize the acid and low P.H from the bleach). "

    My question is ......

Do i still need to heat the water?

    Does is need circulation?

I am going to start this process today ....after I check back to see if any additional comments pop up.

    Thanks guys / gals :cheesy:

No heat or circulation is needed.

On a side note, LFS said soak it in a bucket for a week with heat / circulation / correct salinity and no light...that will kill all the algae and it will be good to go. after 2 days in garage under those conditions ....I don't think I could handle the smell any longer !

I feel your pain. I have to nuke my entire 150G system, tank, sump, all the equipment, plumbing, sand and rock due to that darn fungal outbreak I've been battling. An insane amount of enrythromiacyn medication didn't even phase this stuff I have. Don't forget to spray up under the tank lid too.
