    Hello all!

Down here in Miami the earliest opening time for LFSs is 11 w/ 12 being the norm. Was just curious how common this was. Thanks!

All the LFS around here open at 11:00-12:00. Seems to be a pretty normal time. Keep in mind they have to have time to check everything out in the morning before letting customers in so they can address any problems before all of the little kids rush in begging their parents to get a nemo (or at least thats what happens at the LFSs I go to ;D;D;D).

yeah. i work at a pet store and we come in early to clean cages/ feed the animals / deal with problems. just figured they would come in early enough to open at 9. reefers are just lazy =p. nah i know at least one store goes to the wholesaler frequently in the keys but just hire someone to man the store while youre gone. but then again i dont know how LFSs make money. It seems the costs of starting and maintaining a store would out wiegh the costs of fish sales. thats prolly why theyre not open that much, cant afford to pay the hours. A lot of LFSs are closed monday as well... maybe stock day. IDK. again, just curious.

yep around 11 or 12 here too.

You have to remember with a lot of fish stores being small stores it is likely that they will have only one shift of people. So you figure no one is going to want to work much more than 8 hours a day, so they are really limited that way.

I work at a family owned hardware store, outside of the family of 4 they employee 4 part timers. We are open from 7:30 - 5. A lot of people wish we were open later, but we are already working 9 hour days not including lunch.

My point is the later the open the later they can stay open.

Good point stepho. K+. dap04g, while it does cost a lot to set up and maintain their tanks, hundreds of other people are paying them to set up and maintain THEIR tanks. Also, the LFS gets all of their stuff a lot cheaper than we do. Some things that drive livestock prices up...
Fish Mortality- Sadly, only a relatively small portion of fish that are taken out of the ocean survive.
People are use to and willing to pay a lot for certain fish
Turning a profit- Even if there was a negligible fish mortality rate pre-sale, they still need to increase the price from what they paid for the fish to turn a profit.
All of their equipment also is more expensive for us, but only for the turning a profit reason.

yeah i understand that. i guess im just ignorant of HOW much they mark up their fish prices. idk. I dive and i know how much it takes to get out there (gas/boat fees/ paying evryone that goes out with you) plus the wholesaler had to setup their store as well. i guess what im not sold on is the "hundreds of people" part. The successful LFSs, yeah, but i know of at least 3 stores down here that are dead 75% of the time. i would say capitalism will work it out, but it seems like they wont go away and i dont know how theyre hanging in there... which they obviously are so i should shut up. IDK

It seems like a miracle when you see some stores that are still around when you think they should be long gone. Maybe you just don't see them at busy times? Low rent ;D.

Lol. yeah youre prolly right. Also the successful fish store only has 8 parking spots, 3 of which are usually taken up by staff and a 4th usually by some repair man/ delivery man, so they cant be that busy. idk. im obviously wrong/ dont know what im talking about, but im baffled. maybe ill go talk with the owner to see her business model =p.
